2 killed, 1 injured in Gilroy overturn crash after chase: police

GILROY, Calif. (KGO) -- Two people were killed and another critically injured early Tuesday after a stolen vehicle crashed and overturned in Gilroy following a police pursuit, authorities said.

According to the Morgan Hill Police Department, officers made several attempts to stop a stolen vehicle that had previously been spotted by other agencies but were unsuccessful.

During the second attempt on Monterey Road, the vehicle struck a tree and a large dumpster near officers before fleeing toward Gilroy.

Police said the suspect vehicle ran a red light at Monterey Road and Leavesley Road, but officers slowed down and lost sight of it.

The vehicle was later found overturned after crashing into a center median and light pole on Monterey Road near 1st Street.

Three occupants were ejected from the vehicle. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, and the third was airlifted to a hospital with critical injuries.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision. Anyone with information is asked to contact the agency.
