MONTE SERENO, Calif. (KGO) -- Investigators are trying to figure out what led to a house fire that killed two people in Monte Sereno.

Firefighters say the two who died were "older" and crews had trouble getting to them when they arrived on scene.

Cellphone video shot by neighbor Patti Bush shows the home fully engulfed in flames.

"We saw that! You know the fire, the roof was on fire!" said Bob Bush who lives nearby.

Like most of the neighbors, Patti and her husband Bob were sound asleep when their dogs started barking around 2 a.m. Wednesday. They woke up to those barks, and another neighbor screaming, trying to make everyone aware of the fire.

"She called 911 and her husband, her husband actually ran over to the house that was on fire and was banging on the door in case somebody was in there, checked the door and the door was locked, he couldn't get in the house," said Bob Bush.

Sadly, the couple inside died. Not only did neighbors attempt to wake the two up, but fire crews were there as well.

This is what was heard on fire department dispatch: "I've got a two-story house with fire through the roof, we're going to be in the offensive mode..."

"To be honest, the fire itself was a surprise, nobody expects that," said Kamesh Arumugam who lives next door to the home that burned.

Kamesh told us he's saddened to hear that two of his neighbors died, but grateful for those in the area who knocked on his door to get him and his family out of their home.

"We didn't realize until the neighbors came barging in, that's when we came out and saw the huge flame was up at it. We just focused on getting kids safe so we just came out, but when we were out we saw already the fire was up in the roof by then. It was a huge flame going up. It's actually good the neighbors are looking after each other," said Arumugam.

As to the cause of the fire, investigators have not said. Officials have also not publicly released the identities of the two victims.
