Fire on BART trackway in SF creates delays for riders, officials say

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A fire on a trackway in the BART system Thursday afternoon created a delay for commuters, officials said.

Debris caught fire in the tunnel, causing a backup in all directions. Officials shut off power while firefighters put out the fire.

BART first reported the incident around noon, prompting a shutdown of the Red line between Richmond and Millbrae. Service was restored on the Red line just after 3 p.m.

Riders needing to get to San Francisco International Airport were temporarily instructed to take the Yellow line and transfer to the SFO train at the Millbrae station.

Green line service was also temporarily halted but has since been restored and is running on limited service.

This is the third fire in just nine days that's crippled BART and impacted thousands of riders.
