Humpback whale seen in Sacramento River heading back to San Francisco Bay, officials say
RIO VISTA, Calif. (KGO) -- A humpback whale that captivated onlookers after swimming deep into the Sacramento River last week is finally making its way back to the ocean, according to wildlife experts.
The whale, which scientists have officially named "Rio," was first spotted days ago hanging out near the Rio Vista Bridge.
Its unusual presence so far inland sparked both awe and concern, as experts closely monitored its movements in the freshwater system.
In a positive update, the Marine Mammal Center reported that Rio was last seen heading west through the Delta, moving directly toward the San Francisco Bay.
While marine biologists say it remains unclear why Rio decided to venture so far from its natural ocean habitat, its recent westward trajectory is a highly encouraging sign that the whale is successfully navigating its way home.
