Jason Momoa returns to DC as wild antihero Lobo in 'Supergirl'

LOS ANGELES -- Jason Momoa is returning to the DC Universe in a new role, stepping into the boots of the bounty hunter Lobo in the upcoming "Supergirl" film.

Momoa, who previously appeared as Aquaman, said the character is one he has long wanted to play. Growing up, he dreamed not of traditional superheroes, but of a "cigar-smoking, motorcycle-riding bounty hunter," a vision that is now coming to life through the latest DC Studios project.

In the film, Lobo is depicted as an antihero with a rebellious edge. Momoa described what draws him to the role.

"I love the motorcycle, I love hair, the dreadlocks, you know," he said. "I loved that he didn't give a s***, he's an anti-hero. I love that he could fight everybody."

The character of Supergirl offers a very different take on Lobo. In one scene, she describes him as "an immortal with a god complex, killed off his entire planet, not a fun guy."

Despite their differences, the two characters share a common goal, as both are searching for the same group of brigands.

The film also highlights the pair's rough-and-tumble dynamic, including their shared tendency toward nightlife antics.

When asked if he or Supergirl would win in a drinking contest, Momoa said with a laugh, "I'm not even gonna answer that question, but it'd be a fun party!"

While the film leans into a gritty tone, it remains accessible to a broad audience. It is rated PG-13, and Momoa said he looks forward to sharing it with his family.

"That's the exciting thing about playing these superhero movies," he said. "Sitting with your family, because obviously I have kids, so watching with my babies. I'm excited to do that."

"You can see "Supergirl" in theaters Friday.
