Mountain lion spotted in SF Golden Gate Park's Panhandle, authorities say

SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management issued an alert Saturday night warning that a mountain lion had been spotted at the eastern end of Golden Gate Park's Panhandle.

The alert said the cat was spotted near Fell Street and Baker Street in the North of Panhandle neighborhood.

"Animal Care and Control is on scene," the emergency department said. "If you see the mountain lion, slowly back away, do not run."

Anyone encountering a mountain lion was advised to pick up any children with them and keep dogs on a leash.

Mountain lions have been spotted in several parts of the Bay Area. Here's what you should do if you come face-to-face with a wild cat.

"If the mountain lion approaches, make yourself 'big,' wave your arms, shout, throw something, and again, do not run," the agency said.

In January, a young mountain lion was spotted near Lafayette Park and a day later in the Pacific Heights neighborhood.

It was subsequently tranquilized by San Francisco Animal Care and Control and moved to a natural environment, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
