New audio reveals tense negotiations between kidnapping suspects, FBI during CA hostage standoff

SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. -- Federal authorities have released new details and audio from a dramatic hostage standoff involving the alleged kidnapping of two U.S. Forest Service employees near Gumboot Lake in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

The audio captures tense negotiations between an FBI special agent and suspects accused of holding the workers at gunpoint.

"I have two biologists in my custody right now," a voice says in the Broadcastify recording.

Later, the speaker says, "I'm requesting FBI investigator to speak to so that I can release these hostages. Over."

According to the U.S. Forest Service, the two employees were conducting routine field operations when they were allegedly zip-tied and held at gunpoint inside a trailer.

The recordings offer a glimpse into the hourslong hostage standoff, during which the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team, snipers, SWAT teams and bomb units converged on the area. Video from the scene showed law enforcement vehicles and officers responding to the incident.

Authorities said that after 12 hours of negotiations, the two Forest Service employees were released.

Authorities say the suspects, identified as a father and son, are expected to face kidnapping charges involving federal employees.
