Crane collapse damages at least 2 homes in New Jersey

RIVER VALE, New Jersey -- A crane collapsed onto two homes in New Jersey after a tree company truck apparently struck a hidden underground tank while workers were stabilizing the vehicle, officials said. No one was injured.

The crane crashed through the roof of one of the homes on in River Vale, New Jersey around 10 a.m. ET Thursday.

Homeowner Dina DeMayo was in her kitchen when the incident happened.

The tree company crew had parked in the yard and was in the process of stabilizing its truck when one of the mechanical arms used to secure the heavy equipment hit a hidden soft spot underground, believed to be a concrete seepage tank that drains water from the property.

The crane crashed onto DeMayo's garage.

"It split the garage, it went right through the top and split down, I called 911, they said get out of the house," DeMayo said.

The noise from the collapse drew attention from neighbors, who called one another to find out what had happened.

Neighbor Ilene Levin said she witnessed the incident as it unfolded while walking her dog.

"We watched literally in slow motion the truck was going over and the crane went down and all I heard was her scream," Levin said.

DeMayo said the tree company immediately accepted responsibility and began addressing the damage.

"They're doing everything right and their insurance is going to look up everything for myself and my neighbor, they actually called every electrician already, they called contractors...they are on it and I can't say anything other than that they're being wonderful," she said.

Officials said no one was injured. DeMayo said the company is handling the cleanup and repairs.
