RALEIGH, N.C. -- There are new details about the investigation into hazing allegations made against a North Carolina State University (NCSU) fraternity. ABC11 first reported on the allegations on Tuesday.
The Sigma Nu fraternity is currently on interim suspension while the university investigates the allegations under the university's internal student code of conduct, a spokesperson confirmed.
Additionally, the NCSU campus police are also conducting a separate criminal investigation.
Friday, ABC11 was there as officers and SBI agents executed a search warrant at the fraternity house.
The school sent this statement about the law enforcement activity.
"The NC State University Police Department, with assistance from partner law enforcement agencies, executed a search warrant at the Sigma Nu fraternity house as part of an ongoing criminal investigation. To preserve the integrity of the investigation, we are unable to provide further comments at this time. NC State does not tolerate hazing. The safety and well-being of our students is of the utmost importance."
Thursday, Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman told ABC11 she expected charges would come as the investigation continues. But Freeman said Friday she could not comment about the case or the police activity at the fraternity house.
On Wednesday, a message posted outside the fraternity house garnered attention as the chapter remains under an interim suspension during a hazing investigation, with prevention experts saying incidents like these highlight the need for transparency and reporting resources on college campuses.
The words "Relax Pal" were displayed on a white sheet outside the Sigma Nu Beta Tau chapter house and was later removed. It remains unclear whether it was related to the ongoing criminal hazing investigation involving the chapter.
Friday, ABC11's Jon Dowding reached out to the Sigma Nu Fraternity and a spokesperson reissued the statements sent earlier this week to ABC11
"Sigma Nu Fraternity was founded in direct opposition to hazing. Hazing is prohibited by Sigma Nu Fraternity, by North Carolina State University, and by North Carolina law. Sigma Nu chapters and members are expected to adhere to these prohibitions. Sigma Nu membership should be free from hazing and in alignment with the Fraternity's mission to develop ethical leaders inspired by the Fraternity's principles of Love, Honor, and Truth. Sigma Nu Fraternity fully supports and is cooperating with the procedures of law enforcement officials regarding recent reports alleging the occurrence of hazing related to the Beta Tau Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity at North Carolina State University. Any person found responsible for hazing should be held accountable in accordance with applicable laws and procedures."
