San Francisco police shoot man armed with 'edged weapon' near Highway 101

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A San Francisco police officer shot a man who was walking on U.S. Highway 101 while allegedly armed with an edged weapon Thursday.

A 911 dispatcher was recorded alerting law enforcement in the area: "Units standby for a shooting."

SFPD's interim chief, Paul Yep, explained what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting.

"San Francisco police officers were in the area or Northbound highway 101 near Cezar Chavez streets assisting San Francisco Sheriff deputies regarding a male subject walking on the freeway," said Interim Chief Yep.

According to SFPD, when their officer arrived and approached the individual, the officer noticed the man had a weapon.

"During the encounter, the subject produced an edged weapon, and an officer-involved shooting occurred. One San Francisco police officer was involved," said Yep.

Shortly after the shooting, paramedics arrived on scene and transported the person to a nearby hospital.

Tom Everett lives across the freeway and heard the commotion.

"Unfortunately, I'm not shocked. It would be better if I were," said Everett.

Multiple agencies were deployed to the scene. Including the District Attorney's office to investigate. It's still unclear why the person was walking on the freeway, but residents say it's not uncommon to see homeless individuals set up camps along the highway.

"Sometimes you'll see them camping along the area where you see the foliage. They hide out there and all along this section for about a mile there will be places on the Caltrans side of the fence, somebody will set up camp," said Everett.

SFPD said they will hold a town hall meeting 10 days from Thursday's officer involved shooting per standard protocol. As for the shooting victim's medical condition, that is still unknown at this time.
