Oakland Roots face eviction from Coliseum if they don't begin paying $1.4M in overdue rent

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- The Oakland Roots could be barred from playing home games at the Oakland Coliseum if the team does not begin paying its overdue rent Wednesday, according to the venue.

The Roots are $1.4 million behind on rent payments, and the team faces the possibility of losing access to the Coliseum for the remainder of the season if the balance issue is not resolved.

The soccer team said last week it was working on a path forward to ensure the outstanding balance is paid on time. However, a proposed payment plan was rejected.

If the rent is not paid Wednesday, the Roots could be prohibited from playing their home game Saturday, as well as five additional home games scheduled at the Coliseum this season.

The team announced earlier this month that it would not renew its lease with the venue and plans to seek another location for games next season.

If the Roots are unable to play at the Coliseum on Saturday, it remains unclear where the team would hold the match.

The dispute comes as the club prepares for the final months of its tenure at the Coliseum, with its future home venue yet to be determined.
