PITTSBURG, Calif. (KGO) -- Three people were injured in a shooting Monday evening on a BART-to-Antioch transfer platform at the Pittsburg/Bay Point station, prompting a major police response, disrupting train service during the peak commute and leaving riders stranded as authorities searched for suspects.
Police said the three victims were taken to a hospital and are expected to survive. Investigators have one suspect in custody and are searching for a second person believed to be involved.
Dispatch audio captured the initial reports from the scene.
"Someone saw gunfire on transfer platform," a dispatcher said.
Another dispatch report stated: "man seen running in all black with a gun."
According to police, officers responded to the transfer platform around 5:30 p.m. after an argument between two people escalated into gunfire.
The shooting forced the suspension of train service while investigators processed the scene. Riders traveling toward Antioch were required to exit at the Pittsburg/Bay Point station, where long lines formed as passengers waited for bus bridges or sought alternate transportation.
William Lane of Antioch was returning home on BART from San Francisco when he learned of the shooting.
"I was on my way back from San Francisco. I was on BART," Lane said.
Lane said he received a message from a family member shortly after the shooting.
"I got a text from my auntie. She asked me if I was OK," he said. "I checked my phone. It said it was a shooting in Pittsburg. I was like, woah..."
The disruption left many commuters scrambling for rides.
"It was a lot of chaos," said another rider.
"I had to get off the BART to call my mom. She had to come all the way over here from Antioch and come pick me up," Lane said.
Other riders expressed concern about the violence occurring on a route they use regularly.
"It was a little scary because this is the commute I take every day," said Tyler Johnston of Antioch.
Police have not released additional details about the two people believed to have been involved in the shooting. Authorities said one suspect remains in custody while officers continue searching for a second suspect.
The investigation remains ongoing.
