Rally held in support of Concord mother, nurse detained by ICE in Louisiana
Maureen Wanjiru Ngure never missed a homeland security appointment and has no criminal record, according to her husband
CONCORD, Calif. (KGO) -- Members of an East Bay community rallied in support of a Concord woman on Saturday recently detained by ICE.
Maureen Wanjiru Ngure is a nurse and mother of two.
She is originally from Kenya and has been in the United States for 20 years.
Organizers say she was taken into custody when she showed up for a Department of Homeland Security appointment in San Francisco in mid-August.
She is being held 2,000 miles away in a Louisiana detention center.
Her husband says he spoke to her on Friday and described the conditions she's facing.
"There's no privacy, the food is really bad. You take a shower, everybody sees you. You use the bathroom, everybody see you. We are hoping the government will show compassion and just let her out," said Peter Muchendu. "The situation where she's at sounds just cruel on top of everything, being stripped away from your family."
He says Maureen has never missed a homeland security appointment, and has no criminal record.
Concord Mayor Laura Nakamura says she has called politicians to advocate for her release.
