SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- One person is dead after being run over in San Francisco. Police spent hours at two different crime scenes Monday afternoon, saying the driver initially drove off after the collision.

It happened along Mission Street near South Van Ness Avenue.

"All of a sudden I heard about five cop cars, five fire engines, five police cars- everybody running over to here and I figured somebody had gotten shot or gotten runover," said Richard Conway Jr., who was in the area.

Sadly, a person had been runover along Mission Street near South Van Ness Avenue and next to the Chevron gas station and car wash.

"I was just sitting there right at work and then all you hear is a big ole thump," said Allen Bobo who works nearby.

"I saw the man here and they had a yellow blanket over him, and he wasn't moving and I asked the police officer if they are gonna help him or if he is deceased and he said unfortunately he is deceased already," said Conway.

San Francisco police says the driver of the vehicle suspected of running the person over, drove off. A short time later, officers were able to locate the Mercedes that matched the description of the vehicle involved in the hit and run.

After a short pursuit the driver was detained, others in the car including a baby were free to go. When we were there, you could still see the child's car seat behind the Chanel bags in the backseat.

The black Mercedes in the video looks just like the one ABC7 Eyewitness News reporter J.R. Stone saw in surveillance video that was recorded by a nearby business and shown to him off camera.

In that surveillance video, you can actually see the victim seemingly sitting on the hood of that moving car as it goes forward. At one point, that victim falls into the street and the car runs them over.

Police haven't said why the person was in the street or when the initial contact was made.

"I don't see any crosswalk here and this is like an extension of the freeway, this is a main artery. I don't walk across here," said Conway.

"So, you're saying somebody shouldn't have been in the street over here?" asked Stone.

"Exactly!" responded Conway.

"The freeway is right here so when you're coming off this freeway you have a lot of cars doing about at least 50-60 miles per hour coming down the street and they are always trying to make that one light, towards that way, so it is very dangerous especially if you're jaywalking," said Bobo.

At last check, officers have made no mention of any official arrests.
