SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- San Jose police shot and killed a man at a Locke Drive home Sunday night, leaving local residents shaken as investigators work to determine what triggered the fatal confrontation.

Police officers surrounded the home around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Neighbor Stacey Suarez said she watched as the situation quickly escalated.

"We were standing out here and then the SWAT team came they had officers walking with their guns out and went straight down that way," Suarez said.

Suarez said the police response and shooting left her and others in the neighborhood frightened.

"It was pretty scary because I mean we really don't know who it is or if someone that we know or have talked to," she said.

A resident who asked not to be identified said he was inside the home during the incident. He believes the situation stemmed from an argument between his landlord and another tenant.

"I was just gaming in my room, and I heard a lot of commotion, arguing between my roommate and the landlord," he said.

The resident said five people live in the house, including the landlord. He said a female housemate called 911 and reported that the landlord had a gun.

"She said the landlord has a weapon on him a gun she was afraid too. I was afraid," he said.

Asked whether the landlord was intoxicated, the resident said, "Yes he drinks a lot. So, he was very intoxicated. I think he was threatening her because he was drunk and she didn't pay rent."

Police have not confirmed what prompted the initial 911 call.

"The suspect brandished a firearm at officers. Officers then discharged their firearms at the suspect," the San Jose Police Department said in a statement.

Police said the man died at the scene. Authorities have not said how many officers fired their weapons or how many shots were fired.

Neighbors said the sounds they heard resembled flashbangs.

"It is scary because I have my 7-year-old son that plays out here and I have my grandson that comes over here. It's just scary in general. We don't have crime like this," Suarez said.

The San Jose Police Department has not identified the man and said it plans to hold a news conference Tuesday to provide more details.
