LOS ANGELES -- Four flight attendants were injured, and dozens of passengers were shaken up when a United Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles encountered severe turbulence.
The midair emergency unfolded on United Airlines Flight 1157, which departed from Hawaii, as it was coming in to land at Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday night. The aircraft landed safely.
"It only lasted a couple of seconds, it felt like wake turbulence, but we're smooth now," a pilot said in a radio call to air traffic control.

Nearly 200 passengers and 10 crew members were on board the flight. Some of them described the turbulence as sudden and intense.
"I was watching a movie, and all of a sudden we just drop," San Diego resident Marly Wadlington told Eyewitness News. "And it felt like we dropped pretty far. It started shaking, everyone was yelling. We were all super scared."
Coral Pena recalled hearing a loud bang during the incident.
"We just started falling, and I was like, 'Oh my God,'" she said.
Another passenger said she saw a flight attendant with blood on her head and leg.
After landing, the aircraft remained on the tarmac for at least 30 minutes while the injured flight attendants stayed onboard as the plane waited to reach a gate.
In a statement, the airline said four flight attendants were seen by medical personnel. One was taken to the hospital for further treatment.
No passengers were injured.
