HOUSTON -- A man was killed Monday afternoon after Houston police say an ongoing fight among middle school girls escalated into an exchange of gunfire at an apartment complex in southwest Houston.

According to HPD, officers were called to the shooting scene at 4:30 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found one man deceased and another man inside an apartment with a graze wound, police said.

Police said it stemmed from a lingering dispute among the middle school girls who attend a school that was rekindled during their bus ride home Monday.

"They had some kind of argument going on for several days. They got on the bus, argument started again," HPD Lt. Larry Crowson said.

Investigators said the fight continued in the apartment complex parking lot and then moved into a courtyard.

At some point, at least two young men joined in. One had a pistol and the other had a rifle, said Crowson. An exchange of gunfire followed and the victim, in his late teens or early 20s, was killed.

"Look around here. You got a lot of kids, a lot of people moving around this apartment complex," Crowson said. "When there's an exchange of gunfire over basically two girls getting into an argument, very distressing and very dangerous."

As of Monday night, no arrests had been made and no charges had been filed.

A spokeswoman for the school said they are aware of the shooting but cannot confirm any information.
