Health officials warned that the Los Angeles area is seeing more dengue fever cases in people who have not traveled outside the U.S. mainland, a year after the first such case was reported in California.
Health officials are reporting at least eighteen deaths from West Nile virus in the U.S. this year, with three recent deaths recorded in Wisconsin and Illinois. There have been six cases of EEE, including one person who died after testing positive for the virus, as well as dengue cases recorded in several states.
The patient is a woman in her 30s who was exposed in the area of Plymouth County, in the southeastern part of the state.
Oropouche virus is an arthropod-borne virus, meaning a type of virus spread to people by the bite of infected arthropods, a group of insects.
Officials say the mosquito is very stealth-like, flying low to the ground, and has been called an "ankle biter' as these mosquitoes commonly bite people on the leg below the knee.
