Fairfield police identify teen victim in deadly graduation shooting

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (KGO) -- The Fairfield Police Department identified 18-year-old Jamario Baker as the victim of the deadly shooting that occurred at a high school graduation on Wednesday.

The shooting happened Wednesday evening in a parking lot at a campus shared by Sem Yeto and Fairfield High School.

Authorities said roughly 1,000 people were attending the graduation ceremony at Schaefer Stadium when gunfire broke out around 7:15 p.m.

Baker was killed, and three others -- ages 11, 20 and 25 -- were also struck. They are in stable condition.

Community members and local leaders gathered for a healing circle on Saturday to honor Jamario Baker, who was killed, as authorities continue investigating the case.

"I want to make sure we understand what the families are dealing with. We have mother that may not know if she will ever receive the justice for the loss of her son," said community organizer, Ebony Antoine-Rojas, Founder of Broken By Violence.

City officials have described the incident as a targeted shooting. No arrests have been made.

"His name was Jamario Baker. Had just received his diploma. Still wearing his graduation gown. Was shot and killed in the parking lot," said Solano County Supervisor Wanda Williams.

During the healing event, community members reflected on the trauma experienced by families and the broader community.

"This mother was doting around son. And this is your graduation day," said Fairfield City Council Member K. Patrice Williams. "And then the last moments is this woman doing CPR on her son? It's a lot. And we feel her."

Organizers said the gathering was intended to provide a space for unity and support in the aftermath of the violence.

"What happened on Wednesday was not normal!" said Fairfield-Suisun Unified School Board President Helen Tilley. She praised Sem Yeto high's graduating seniors.

But on Friday, Fairfield police addressed concerns that the school district did not follow proper protocol to request police presence at the graduation. When asked about that specifically, President Tilley declined to be interviewed by ABC7 Eyewitness News.

"When you have over a thousand people at (the Sem Yeto graduation), and no thinks to have at least one cop there? That whole situation is strange to me. Somebody needs to be held accountable. A kid died. And it was only the police response after-the-fact. I mean, you might even have a suspect by now if you had police on site," said Larry Bluford, Jr., who also spoke at the event. He is the founder of the grassroots organization R.E.A.L., which works with young people.

Community leaders also acknowledged the emotional toll on students and families, noting this was not the only recent incident affecting the area. Nikila Walker Gibson, president of the Tri-City NAACP, said students are still processing another recent event involving a Fairfield High School student.

"We are opening it up and saying, 'Come on in! Let us hold you.' Because this is too much for you to hold on your own. These are our children. So, let us hold you. Let us help you," Walker Gibson said.

During the event, she emphasized that the gathering was about support rather than immediate answers.

"While others are carrying the burden of witness, the effects of violence on our schools, our families, our community, tonight is not about having all the answers," said Gibson.

As the investigation continues, community leaders said the focus remains on healing and supporting those affected by the loss.
