Suspect in custody after allegedly threatening woman, shooting at officers at Manzanita Park: OPD

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Oakland Police Department says officers locked down the area near Manzanita Park on Sunday as officers searched for a suspect who threatened a woman and shot at officers.

Police Chief James Beere said officers responded to multiple calls around 10:30 a.m.of a man threatening to kill a woman at Manzanita Park.

"Officers arrived on scene, and he immediately began shooting at the officers. Officers returned fire and the man fled into the neighborhood," Beere said.

Additional officers arrived to set up a perimeter around the area and residents were asked to shelter in place as police searched for the suspect. The woman was safely relocated to different location.

OPD updated just before 3 p.m., saying the suspect had been apprehended and taken into custody after locating him at a vacant house.

"Unfortunately, in that process, he started to throw flammable cans that he lit on fire at the police officers, and then lit the building that he was in on fire," Beere said. "The officers had to emergency deploy smoke to get him to leave the building, at which point, once he exited, our canine unit and our tactical team took him into custody."

Police did not report any officer injuries but said the suspect was transferred to the hospital for treatment after "violently resisting" arrest.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
