Teen killed in SF crash with Recology truck that sent car off overpass

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A 17-year-old boy was killed early Saturday when the car he was in collided with a tractor-trailer on Interstate Highway 80 in San Francisco and flew off an overpass, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred at about 1:30 a.m. on eastbound I-80 at the elevated Seventh Street offramp, CHP Officer Mark Andrews said.

A gray Chevrolet Camaro in the fast lane approaching the offramp clipped the left front of a Recology truck, sending both vehicles into the sand barrels at the top of the exit, Andrews said.

While the truck was able to stop, the Camaro was catapulted over the barrels, over the metal bridge railing and fell about 25 feet down into the San Francisco Police Department's impound lot at 450 Seventh St.

The Camaro struck several unoccupied vehicles in the lot, continued forward and toppled over onto its roof, landing atop another unoccupied vehicle, Andrews said.

Two passengers in the rear of the Camaro had to be extricated by firefighters. One, age 18, was taken to a hospital with major injuries, the CHP said. The other, age 17, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement, Recology said: "Safety is our top priority at Recology, and we are working with the proper authorities to determine exactly what happened."

The CHP initially said the age of the dead passenger was 18. It was revised to 17 after further investigation.

The San Mateo Union High School District says the teen who died was a member of the Class of 2026.

"There are no words that can fully capture the grief and shock of losing a member of our Hillsdale High School family," the district said in a statement. "Even though the school year has ended, our commitment to our students and families has not."

The district plans to offer mental health resources for students Monday.

The 18-year-old driver of the Camaro and a 17-year-old front seat passenger were taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, Andrews said.

Alcohol and drugs don't appear to be factors in the crash, Andrews said. Investigators are looking at speed as a factor. An investigation was continuing.
