SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- A popular waterpark in the South Bay will not open this summer.
The city says CaliBunga -- formerly Raging Waters -- is closed. It's really a Cali-bummer for families looking forward to summer fun there.
We looked into what's next for the waterpark.
The sights and sounds of summer fun are usually familiar for this time of year at CaliBunga Waterpark, a San Jose hotspot for staying cool -- but not this summer.
The city announced Thursday that the decades-old waterpark is closing to make way for a new vision at Lake Cunningham Regional Park.

"To create a modern aquatic destination featuring state-of-the-art water park, expanded aquatic amenities and really innovative interactive play experiences that can better serve the residents of the area and all of San Jose, really, and even visitors for generations to come," said
Ed Bautista with the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services department.
San Jose is parting ways with the operators of CaliBunga and teaming up with a local company called Lakeside Partners for the new project.
"There's been, you know, an extensive RFP, request for proposal, developed with applicants and then going through the process until it was finally decided prospective proposal was selected. And we're currently in the midst of working through the agreement," Bautista said.
The announcement comes just two years after CaliBunga-- formerly known as Raging Waters-- reopened under new management.
Mayor Matt Mahan at the time praised the park.

"We are opened for business here finally at CaliBunga. I'm excited for families to come and enjoy. It's really become a past time here," Mahan said.
A past time that's reached the end of its time. The city says the beloved summer-destination is likely to be torn down.
"It was going to need a new transformation to keep up with the times. And to, you know, to keep them more exciting as things get better and better everywhere else. You know, you need to keep up and keep it exciting for families to go to," Bautista said.
It's unclear what changes are coming to the water park, and there is no timeline for its reopening.
In the meantime, Lakeside Partners is planning special events for the community, including a live concert series at the park. It is also working with some local schools to open pools to the public.
