NEW YORK -- A woman was stabbed in the neck while jogging in Brooklyn on Friday night.

The New York Police Department released an image of Katie Suarez, who remains in critical condition.

Police sources say the 28-year-old woman was attacked while she was out training for the New York City Marathon.

The stabbing happened shortly after 8 p.m. Friday near Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue. Sources said Suarez was jogging along the path when she was attacked.

She was later found by her father, who went looking for her when she did not return home.

Police have not identified any suspects or announced a motive.

Flowers and candles have been placed outside Suarez's home.

Neighbors expressed shock over the attack.

"It's really sad. When it's so close to home, it's so unfortunate, and I, I mean, it's terrible," one neighbor said.

The stabbing has raised concerns among residents who use the area for recreation.

"I would have my guard up a little more now, just, you know, see who's around me maybe do in safer times," another resident said.

Police said they are using every tool at their disposal in the investigation, including K-9 units, scuba teams, drones and a Crime Stoppers truck.

Meanwhile, New York State Senator Steve Chan is calling for additional lighting along the path.

"They rebuilt that foot bridge coming across from 17th Ave so with that foot bridge they also ran new wires to this side. I know there's going to be a couple lights on this side, but they need more," Chan said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the NYPD.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen Suarez between 7:56 p.m. and 8:12 p.m. Friday in the vicinity of the eastbound bike path along the Belt Parkway between Bay 8th Street and Bay 17th Street to come forward as investigators continue to piece together what happened.
