SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco voters are preparing to elect someone other than Nancy Pelosi to Congress for the first time in nearly four decades, with state Sen. Scott Wiener and Supervisor Connie Chan competing to succeed the former House speaker.

With Pelosi backing Chan and other prominent Democrats, including former Rep. Katie Porter, supporting Wiener, the race will determine not only who represents San Francisco in Congress but also what kind of Democrat voters want to succeed Pelosi.

Both Democrats support expanding health care access and federal investment in housing, but they differ sharply over regulating artificial intelligence, addressing the housing shortage and taxing billionaires.

Chan, a labor-backed progressive endorsed by Pelosi, is calling for stricter oversight of AI, including a moratorium on new AI data centers until stronger federal safeguards are established, while Wiener favors safety standards that balance regulation with technological innovation.

On housing, Wiener wants to use federal incentives to accelerate construction and expand social housing, while Chan emphasizes affordability requirements, rental assistance and keeping existing residents housed.

Both candidates support moving toward Medicare for All, but Chan backs Proposition 40, a proposed one-time 5% wealth tax on California billionaires, while Wiener opposes using a one-time tax to pay for ongoing health care expenses.

The candidates also differ over corporate campaign money and U.S. military assistance to Israel, reflecting broader disagreements over the direction of the Democratic Party.
