Scammers are spoofing iPhone Duo ordering websites; here's what to look out for
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Cybersecurity experts are warning iPhone fans not to get too excited about the recently released iPhone Duo -- there are scammers out there ready to take advantage of foldable phone fever.
According to a new report by cybersecurity firm Trend Micro, there's been a wave of new websites posing as Apple iPhone Duo ordering pages -- offering discounts, early access and giveaways.
Trend Micro says these fake websites can lead to a variety of scams. Some are designed to steal credit card information if you attempt to buy a phone. Others were found to have code that can steal personal information off your device.
Consumers are urged to keep an eye out for the warning signs of a scam site.
First, check to see if you're on the official website for Apple or another known and trusted retailer. The site might look like the real deal -- but double-check the URL to be sure.
Next, these sites sometimes use countdown timers to create a sense of urgency -- and to get you to submit your information before you can think.
Finally, if a site asks to pair or link with a messaging app, that's an indication scammers are trying to access your information or even send messages as you. So don't authorize access to your WhatsApp or any other service on your phone.
