Vehicle crashed into fire truck, officials say
GRANVILLE COUNTY, N.C. -- Three people were killed and a 10-year-old boy was critically injured in a crash in North Carolina early Saturday morning.
The State Highway Patrol responded around 4 a.m. to a crash involving a Toyota Highlander, a Providence Fire Department fire engine and a pickup truck.
Investigators said the Toyota Highlander was traveling north on Interstate 85 while the fire engine, with its emergency lights activated, and the pickup truck were stopped in the roadway. The fire engine was blocking the scene of an earlier crash.
The Toyota Highlander failed to slow down and struck the rear of the fire engine. After the initial impact, the SUV collided with the pickup truck before coming to rest in the roadway.

The Highlander was occupied by a family of four. The driver, Jason Nye, 31, of Charlotte, and passenger Christina Nye, 32, of Charlotte, were killed at the scene along with their 6-year-old daughter. Authorities have not released the girl's identity.
A 10-year-old boy was airlifted to Duke University Hospital in critical condition.
The pickup truck and Providence Fire Department Engine 61 were unoccupied at the time of the crash.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
